commentsGone With the Wind, New Kids on the Block and a healthy fixation with reality television were my favorite commonalities with Johna. I cherish those weekends that we'd both spend working away in our classrooms to get ready for the next week at Dawes. For me Saturdays or Sundays got lonely when she left to go to Columbus.
I remember our days in college in both writing classes and completing our college journey together with our methods group. As I finished my preteaching years and even as I student taught, I felt as though I often had no personal life, but I always admired the fact that she could manage both professional and personal commitments with ease and an overabundance of time and respect for both.
She was with me as I developed a large part of my teaching style and I'm sure some of her rubbed off on me during our minilessons and our days together at Dawes. I will never forget her enthusiasm and ability to make the impossible possible for those around her. Her legacy is endless as she touched so many people in her teaching career and just in her personal life.
My favorite Johna memory was her wedding to Brian and the reception that followed. It was one of the most entertaining and fabulous events I've had the honor to attend. Only Johna could have ended up with former Survivor contestants dancing at her wedding!
My heart goes out to Brian and Jamison, and also to her sisters and parents who she always spoke of with such great love and admiration. I consider myself lucky to have been touched by her and hope that time will ease the pain of her loss for all of us.

Her laughter, her sense of humor, and of course her practical jokes will never be forgotten. I will miss her "pranks" but most of all her wonderful smile. She lite up a room when she entered. My heart goes out to all the Berners and Kozaks. God Bless you all!!

commentsRoger, Linda, and family, I can remember the day that Johna entered my life over 23 years ago as we moved into the house next to yours. My mom pulled her off her bike on the sidewalk into our new home to introduce her as my new friend. She filled the role perfectly and then some. I am so grateful to have had her in my life, and I will miss her always. To the Kozak and Berner families, I am so sorry for your loss.

commentsI am so sorry to hear of Johna's passing today. I have so
many wonderful memories of Johna and I growing up. There
are many things I think of that make me smile anytime I think
of Johna...From the family vacations to the Ozarks (with her
family), to the times swimming in the lake in her backyard.
Johna was such an awesome friend and someone who will be
in my fondest memories forever. May Gad be with you, Brian,
Jamison, Roger, Linda, Karen, Jessica, and all of Johna's family
and friends in this unbelievably difficult time. She will be
missed terribly by all that knew her.

Even at the worst of times for Johna, she still never stopped worrying about everyone else and was always trying to comfort those around her. She defines the word "Angel" in every aspect imaginable. Your family has meant so much to me and I want to thank you for letting me be a part of this very tough time in your lives! Johna will always be a "Survivor" in our hearts and will be remembered always. I am thinking of you often and my heart goes out to all of you! Don't forget to drink your Ovaltine!!

It breaks my heart to write to you today. As Johna's former teacher and coach at Everett Junior High, I speak for all the staff when I say she will be sorely missed. Her smile brought joy to all who knew her. Her teammates were always encouraged by Johna no matter what the score. What wonderful memories I have of her beating all comers, boys and girls, in free throw shooting contests. She had a natural touch on the basketball. My candle burns a little dimmer today but we all know God only takes the best! Myles Dymacek

commentsFirst of all I wanted to let you all know that you are all in my every thought and prayer. Johna was a wonderful lady and the short time that I knew here I was touched by her love of life and her joy of her son. Johna was a member of our Mothers Of Young Children group. Her and Rhonna had come together at several of our meetings. We always missed the pair of them if they weren't there. She had just attended a meeting the weekend before she was diagnosed and we were devastated by the news when we found out. Periodically we would hear from her and she would write thank you notes that would bring us all to tears. She inspired all of us to be a better mom. She also taught us a great lesson in love for our children. We all take for granted being able to hold, feet, bathe, and just preform the every day tasks with our children. Just know that your daughter touched so many people and will continue to do so. We will keep her memory and words of wisdom alive in our group of moms. We want to help in any way that we can. So if you are in need of anything we can provide, please feel free to contact us. God bless you!

commentsKaren & Corky, Roger & Linda, Jessica, Brian & Jamison-
Words cannot express how sorry I am to hear that Johna's life was cut so short from such a terrible disease. It certainly does not seem fair. She has been on the prayer list @ our church here in Kearney for months, and I was really hoping and praying that her body could overcome the leukemia.
After following her journey through her websight, and also now reading all the wonderful things people are saying about her in this guest book, I can tell that she was quite a loving, funny, and all around neat person!
Brian- I wish I could have been at your wedding, it sounds like it was quite the event!
I am also so so sorry that I will not be able to come to Columbus today or tomorrow to be with you and your families. I really want to be their so badly! I do however want you to know that my thoughts and prayers have been with you for a very long time, and now pretty much constantly since Karen called me on Tues. night to share the horrible news.
I can only imagine what a long hard road lies ahead of you, but I do hope that when it seems to much to bear, that you can find some comfort in knowing that Johna is in the best place ever, with nothing but love and happiness surrounding her!
My deepest sympathy, Angie Sostad (Karen's friend from nursing school)

commentsA special child of God's has been called home. Though each of us will miss Johna in our own way, we will have known her. Her love, laughter, infectious smile, nuturing ways and genuine caring for others will always be with each of us. For knowing her and these memories we are thankful. We are in FL attending the Orange Bowl and are sorry we wil not be able to attend Johna's Life Celebration. We will be there in spirit, as Johna's spirit, will always be with us. May the peace of Christ be with all who knew and loved her!

commentsI am so sorry to hear about Johna. I can't imagine the pain that you all must feel. Johna was a wonderful person, so happy, and fun to be around. The world will definitely miss her! I have so many fun memories of her, and the times that we spent together in the dorms in college were unforgettable. We would have "slumber parties" and watch Gone with the Wind, Lonesome Dove, and Little House on The Prairie. She will definitely be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this very difficult time.

Johna fought the fight and now it's time to celebrate the life she shared with so many. I did not have the pleasure of knowing Johna in her adult years. But I have many memories of her being the little sister that was always busy working on her next joke or prank. She annoyed us, but we always laughed afterwards!! Laughter is Johna's legacy. As you remember her in your current sadness, her laughter and ability to make everyone laugh will carry you through the tough times. May God comfort you and give you the strength to live and laugh in Johna's honor! I Love you All, Jodi

commentsI first met Johna in kindergarten at Lakeview Elementary, I remember her smile the most. My family moved to Chicago after 3rd grade and returned at the start of 9th grade at Everett. I didn't expect anyone to remember me but I will never forget that first week when Johna came up to me with a picture of us in the lunchroom at Lakeview when we were little. She was always so sweet to everyone. I transferred to Pius X for the rest of highschool but ran into Johna periodically through highschool, college and after. While doing marketing work I became involved at Dawes Junior High's VIP program where I ran into Johna again. She always remembered everyone! I am so sad for Brian and Jamison. I pray that you will look to God for guidance and lean on Him as well as your family during this very hard time.

commentsOur son would have been in one of Johna's classes this year. We've been praying for her recovery and her return to teaching which she so obviously loved. In reading on Johna's website, I saw the verse from Isaiah that her donor had sent:
But those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not be faint.
That strength has come to her now. May you feel the Lord's arms around you all at this difficult time.

There wasn't anyone around her that didn't smile, and all of my fondest memories of Dawes involve her. She took a closet of a room and made it work; made every student smile about it! They adored her and so did every staff person. I hear her giggle now and still see the way she joked with all of us. You gave her a beautiful life and she gave us incredibly fun times. My thoughts about her in heaven? She's with friends and she's organizing her next prank! We will miss her. Much love to you.

I was sure I knew her. I graduated with Johna from the Middle Level Program and thought the world of her. I unfortunately did not keep in touch with her after graduation eventhough we were both in Lincoln. Today, I pray for you both as well as the entire family. Johna was a beautiful person and Jamison was blessed to have his mommy for the time he did. I know many people and students have been affected by Johna's love. Thank you for allowing me to see what a great mother and wife she became in the pictures that you share on the website.

commentsI am sorry to hear of the passing of Johna. Brian and Jamison, I am so sorry for your loss. Jamison, know what a special mommy you had, and how lucky you are to have her. Johna worked with me many of summers at Willard with me during my time in elementary school. We would always so much together, playing cards, watching movies, going on outings. But the memory that I have of her that will always stand out, is when she left for Paris and how excited she was about that. She never let any of us down. She was always there. Johna made an impact on me during those many summers. One that I am grateful for. She always had a smile on her face and such a happy person. Even after I had moved on she'd never be shy to say "hey" whenever our paths crossed. I had lost touch with her in the years to follow, but when I read her story in the paper this past summer, it brought a tear to my eye. I knew that if anyone could beat it, I knew that Johna could. She is in a better place now, and at rest. May God be with you during your time of sorrow. Know that she is watching down from above.

commentsI only knew Johna a short time here in Columbus, but I have
so many special memories of her. I was on the 6 Blue team
when she taught science. Her smile, sense of humor, and
positive attitude contributed greatly to the success of the
team and the students.
I especially remember visiting Johna in Norfolk after the birth
of Jamison. Another team member and I brought her a
stuffed dog that we had a wonderful time picking out for the
new family member. It was very obvious that Johna was going
to be a terrific mother.
Johna graciously agreed to be an honorary captain for the CPS
"Relay for Life" team in the spring of 2006. I was the captain
of the team and very pleased to see her participate in the
survivors walk. This was just another example of the positive
attitude she had about life.

commentsI've known Johna since our freshman year in college. I remember the first time I met her at a sorority rush event. She stood out somehow. At first I thought it was because she was the prettiest girl there. But as soon as I spoke to her, I realized it wasn't that simple. She stood out because she was... Johna. Anyone who knew her knows what that means. There was just no one like her. No one as lively and funny and perfectly comfortable being who she was. She had a knack for making something out of nothing, and making absolutely anything fun. Who else could have made it so fun to be 18 years old in Nebraska? I remember playing Bingo on Friday nights with Johna at bingo halls in Lincoln. We might be the only ones under 70 years old in the whole place, and darn it, we had a good time! I remember driving down to the Johnson county fair, and playing bingo again, with corn kernels. I remember laughing so hard that I had to cry, when Johna told me "stories" about nothing: like why boys weren't allowed in the "pink room" when she was growing up; about that poor kid Phil who got bit by the squirrel in jr. high; and how she had to order ALL of Dick Clark's hits of the 1950's on CD when she saw it on a late night info-mercial. I remember saying goodbye to Johna 10 years ago, when we graduated from college and I moved away. I remember how sad I was saying goodbye then, because that was the first time that I realized how grateful I was for her friendship. Not just because she was the source of a lot of good fun for the past four years, but because she taught me a lot about how to live, even without ever saying a word about it. I cried 10 years ago when I said goodbye, and back then, those were tears of gratitude, because when I hugged her goodbye it just hit me that I was SO LUCKY to have had her as a friend. When I said goodbye to Johna on Christmas Eve this year, I cried again and this time it was much, much harder. But one thing remains the same, I will always be grateful for the gifts that Johna gave me: Her friendship, and her example of how to live well, with humor and good will, and irrepressible personality. My deepest sympathies go to those who loved her most: Brian, Jamison, Roger, Linda, Karen, Jess and the Berner and Kozak families.
Love Always,

commentsTo Jess, Brian, and the Berner/Kozak families - my thoughts and prayers are with you today as you celebrate Johna's life. For the past week, I've tried to think of something wonderful to write in here, and all I can tell you is how sorry I am that you had to say goodbye to such a wonderful, beautiful person. Jess, I will always remember working at Willard with the two of you, playing pitch and Phase 10. Watching the two of you together made me realize how strong of a bond two sisters can really have.
Even though I can't be there today, I will be thinking of you and your families, and I know that Johna will be with you as well.

commentsI am a friend of Maye McCarron, Johna's aunt...I send my condolences to your entire family. God works in "mysterious ways"...and sometimes it takes time to understand the "why"?
May your family find peace in knowing that Johna's hard times are over, it is family and friends that are so important at difficult times like this...our prayers are with you all.

commentsOur deepest sympathys go out to Johna's family and many friends. We lost my sister in law in January to melanoma and like Johna's battle it was a hard fight. My oldest daughter Courtney was part of the daycare at Willard Community Center and at times when she was younger Johna would be part of the staff. Courtney has been kept informed on what has been going on and was saddened when she was told this week of Johna's passing. Our hearts go out to her family. God bless!

comments To members of Johna Kozak's family:
My thoughts are with you all. I didn't know Johna well, but I know she was a wonderful person with a great smile who was greatly loved and cared for by her family and friends. I know that many tears will be shed today and in the time to come. But I also feel it in my heart that she is walking the golden streets of heaven, hand-in-hand with Papa Jay and other loved ones who were there to greet her.

commentsI remember Johna as a 3 year old taking dance lessons from me, in her little black leotard, ballet shoes and long blonde hair. She was a student for many years and the grace and confidence she developed stayed with her throughout her life. I was delighted to learn that she too became a teacher with a love for educating young people! Our condolences go out to both of your families in the loss of such a wonderful young woman, wife and mother!

commentsTo Johna's dear family: Sixteen years ago a bright eyed beautiful blond girl helped care for our son, Matthew, at Little Angel Academy in Lincoln, NE. Not only was she his wonderful part time caretaker, but she was also our friend. We were greeted every evening with her smile and upbeat attitude leaving us smiling as we left. We will always remember this about her and will love her dearly for the care she gave to our son. We have been fortunate to see Johna occasionally throughout these past years and she still always had that smile on her face. Having lost another son a couple years back, we know how difficult this time is and that there are never the right words to say or hear. Cherish each memory as that helps as much as anything can. We will always cherish our memories of Johna and what she did for us. Our prayers are with you all.

commentsSo many memories at your house in high school. Karen and I hanging out, sometimes welcoming Johna and Jessica, other times trying to "get rid" of them. It seems like such a short time ago. I always thought Karen was so lucky to have sisters though, because I had always wanted one. I guess the past year or two for you has really shown what a true bond sisters have.

commentsI knew Johna in high school, although she probably didn't know who I was as I was 2 grades below. I always looked up to her though. I thought she was so beautiful and I wanted to be just like her. Luckily, in college, I was fortunate to meet her when I joined the same sorority. Even better, she became my "big sister" We were close for a couple of years before she graduated and then we just lost contact. I feel so fortunate to have had a relationship with her even though it was for a short time. Her love for life was so inspiring to me. I remember the sorority events at her parents house, her 21st birthday(at her parents bar) her love for Gone with Wind. I remember at that time Jess really liked the song "what if God was one of us" and Johna thought that was so crazy! I remember driving around in the convertable mustang. I remember when she met Brian.
Johna taught me to go all out for things I loved and make a big deal out of it! That season of my life is so treasured and I will always remember the wonderful person Johna was. Thank you so much Johna!

commentsMy thoughts and prayers go out to all of you during this tough time. I was shocked to hear from my mom that Johna not only fought such a hard battle, but that she had passed away. I remember times with Johna when Jeanie Crounse used to babysit us, in Elementary School, Jr. High, and High School. Then we later worked together at Lil' Angel Academy Daycare. Johna had such a wonder heart and smile. The children seemed to flock to her, it's no wonder that she went on to teach. She will be missed dearly.

commentsI remember Johna always being a supportive upbeat person whenever there was any situation that seemed impossible to overcome. I also remember how much she loved to listen to oldies music and how it made her feel wonderful. I am truly sorry about Johna leaving us all, because she really was a blessing to all who got to know her.

commentsLinda, this is just from me to you. I dont know what you are going through right now and I hope I will never know. You are so strong and I am very proud of you. Our family always thought I was the tough one but you have me beat a hundred times over. I love you. We are going to have to have a slumber party in Johna's honor. Remember the one at the Sleep Inn in Syracuse after going to Lincoln and watching Chain-saw Massacre? When Johna and Jess came up out of the ditch off of Hi-way 2 and scared the crap out of us!! We have so many great memories of Big J she won't be forgotten even for a minute. She always had to do something a little better or a little quicker than anyone else. This time she got to go see PaPa Jay before us, She is probably looking down at us right now with that you know what kind of grin on her face! I loved her then and I love her now. commentsI probably had't talked to Johna since she was just getting accepted into the teachers program at UNL and when I was in Towne Club with her. I didn't know about her website until after she passed away, and I think it has helped a lot of us who knew her. I can't imagine what her husband and family is going through, but they're all in my prayers and I know that everyone will make sure Jamison knows what and amazing Mom and incredible person Johna was.

commentsDear Brian & Kozak family:
I am so sorry to hear about Johna. The news was a complete shock. I was just visiting Craig's grave and later that day learned of the news. I hadn't seen Johna in a few years, but often prayed for her and the Kozak family. Brian, I am so sorry you've experienced recent tragedies, but I hope you and Jamison can find peace. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Johna had one of the biggest hearts and I'm sure she is making heaven even brighter. Much love to you all.
